Nuttin But Strings

I believe there is a direct correlation between the increase in school violence, low graduation rates, low test scores and the removal of the arts in school.  With the introduction of technology children have successfully learned a great many new skills and talents.   Yet, there is no substitute for creativity and inspiration.

Here at Woogi World we try to introduce children to a host of activities that will motivate and inspire them to create responsible relationships, expand on ideas and participate both online and offline.   The question always comes up, how do you motivate kids to participate in things that they perceive to not be cool.

Peer pressure is a powerful force in the world.  Knowing this we must present to children ideas, projects and possibilities that are beneficial in a manner that is "cool" to them.

Recently, I ran into a producer that introduced me to two young men that are Julliard trained musicians that have taken that classic training and applied it in a way that is attracting children around the country back into music. Brothers Damien and Tourie Escobar form the group Nuttin But Stringz, which is a venture into hip-hop violin.

Upon first look, these brothers appear to be the cookie-cutter, spitting image of wannabe rappers. Don't worry these guys will not start a freestyle rant. That's what's so unique and interesting about them. Instead they pull out these classical instruments, the violins, and easily make you realize they are unrelated to the hip-hop culture and make you feel their intensity through your bones. Hence the name, Nuttin' But Stringz.

Jodd Knight, a sophomore at Baruch College and musician, says that "NBS epitomizes innovation and unique sound, and bring a much welcomed freshness to the ever-stagnant music game."

What is most exciting to this writer is the effect they are having on children when it comes to getting kids to learn music and maintain their studies.  When kids see these guys on video they are inspired to get past the ridicule they may face when carrying their violin, flute, sax or recorder on their way to music lessons.

Whatever it takes to motivate and inspire a child to greatness, I am all for it.

If you know of kids that want to study music but are distracted or affected by peer pressure, pass this video along.  It just might help.
