The Millenials Are Here
Set aside 15 minutes
to view a video that shows why we must educate children as early as possible
about the advantages of seeing the world different, to benefit the world as a
whole, not just the individual.
Children born between 1980 and 1995 are the
"Millenials" - 80 million kids that have grown up generally believing Burger
King - that they should "have it their
way." "They were raised by doting parents who told them they are special,
and they played in little leagues with no winners or losers, or ALL winners.
They were laden with trophies just for participating..." reports Morley Safer
for 60 Minutes (11/2007 and 5/2008). Even at Woogi World we're anxious
about bruising the young psyche - concerned about whether we should prominently
place a Woogi Olympics leader board on the site so kids can track their
accomplishments. Worried that this might offend someone.
WHY all this angst? At some point kids need to be allowed
to experience the real world - "You lost, but you'll live. Now work harder,
do more, try again." I believe it is possible to applaud those that achieve
while at the same time provide those that didn't finish first or even in the
top three, with a sense of accomplishment, belonging, and the courage to give it
another shot.
And on the issue of work ethic, Safer's report continues:
"They believe (millennials) they come first and have been coddled by their
parents to the point of being ill-prepared for a demanding 21st
Century workplace.This collective
attitude is taking its toll on the workplace: Companies are changing their
hiring, training, and retention practices (costing those companies and
inevitably the consumers, a bundle). Watch the 60 Minutes report, "The Millenials Are Coming," to get a picture
of what's on the horizon.
So what will give them a competitive advantage in our
global economy? Analytic thinking skills, creativity, and collaboration ability
coupled with a dynamic work ethic. And they must understand that life means hard
work and includes losses and setbacks - that being able to spring back from such
is as important as excelling in all academic disciplines. For that to happen, we
need to get out of the way and let our kids experience losing as well as
winning. We must help children see the benefits of helping others, sharing with
others to improve the whole and participating in community in order to have the
“sustainable lifestyle they deserve.
This will not happen if we ban "Tag" in schools, have
Pizza parties after losing the game or are afraid to allow
children to compete openly and honestly in a free environment.
